UIC alum, Mets star gives back to the community with youth program
Blue Island native and New York Mets player Curtis Granderson may be a rival of the Chicago Cubs, but he’s made giving back to the city one of his top priorities. While in town Tuesday to play the Cubs, he held a baseball clinic for local children at his alma mater, the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, 10,000 young baseball players from diverse backgrounds attended the camp, which emphasizes understanding cultural differences and expanding the youths’ world views. “We want them there so they can see what a college campus looks like, seeing how cool baseball is and just meeting kids that don’t look like you,” Granderson told the New York Daily News.
